  Repetative Prayer Q&A

Answers to know of Questions posed to you by different Christian Denomination & sects. By Fredrick Correa.

People will quote to you Matthew 6 : 7,  and tell you  not to say the Holy Rosary.  They specifically quote  from the old King James version, though currently many of them use the revised version. Anyhow, their main objection is that we use repetitive phrases.

 1. When our Lord said do not use vain repetitive words, He also added as the heathens do. He was referring to 1 Kings 18 : 26 – 29 when the heathens were challenged by prophet Elijah and were urging Baal to accept their sacrifice, using the same words over and over again. When our Lord said those words, there was no practice of the recitation of the Rosary and there was no way  our Lord would  have referred to the Rosary.

2. Going by their logic, even our Lord’s prayer should not be said more than once.

3. Matthew 20 : 30 – 31 The two blind men repeated  Lord, Son of David, have mercy on us. Did Jesus not hear them for the first time that they had to repeat or did Jesus scold them for repeating what they had said earlier?

4. Jesus Himself repeated the same words in His prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. Matthew 26 : 39,  42, 44.

5. St. Paul urges, 1 Thessalonians 5 : 17,  pray without ceasing.    Revelation 4 : 8  . . . day and night, they never stop singing, Holy, holy, holy  is the Lord God Almighty, who was, who is and who is to come.

6. In Psalm 136 there are 26 verses.  The verse,  His mercy endures forever is repeated 26 times. So should we recite only the first verse and not recite the remaining 25 verses?

7. The Rosary consists of our Lord’s prayer – Matthew 6 : 9 – 13 and the Hail Marys which begins with the salutation Hail full of grace, the Lord is with you (Luke 1 : 28).  Elizabeth who was filled with the Holy Spirit exclaimed in a loud voice, Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. (Luke 1 : 41 - 42).

Holy Mary, mother of God (Luke 1 : 43   And why this has happened to me, that the mother of my Lord  comes to visit me?) After the Babylonian  captivity, the Jews commonly referred to God as Lord. In the scriptures the word Lord is referred to God a number of times.

Luke 1 : 11 the angel of the Lord appeared to him. . .

Luke 1 : 6 . . . they obeyed fully the laws and commandments of the Lord.

Psalm 35 : 23 Arise and be attentive to my judgement:  to my cause, my God and my Lord.

Suppose there is a student who becomes a doctor. The day, he becomes a doctor, his mother will be known as doctor’s mother. She has not become the doctor but she has every right to be addressed or known as doctor’s mother. In the same way, Mary is human but she has every right to be addressed as mother of God, because she has given birth to the Son of God. If Jesus was not Divine,  the wise men would not have worshipped Him.

Matthew 2 : 11  And entering into the house, they found the child with Mary, His mother and falling down, they worshipped Him.

Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

James 5 : 16  The prayers of a righteous man has great power in its effects.

1 Timothy 2 : 1  First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions and thanksgivings be made for all men.

When we are in need do we not request our friends and relatives to pray for us. If we can request ordinary people to pray for us, should we not request a Blessed person to pray for us?

8. Though we begin the Hail Mary with the salutation to our Blessed Mother, it ends up with the precious name of Jesus. So as many times as we say the Hail Mary, so many times we take the precious name of Jesus, who is the way, the truth and the life (John 14 : 6).

The Rosary is eminently Biblical - Pope Paul VI

If you have attended any charismatic meeting, just observe as to  how many times they repeat the word Lord or Praise the Lord.  At an average, they repeat those words more than 100 times in about 5 minutes. If they can repeat those words more than 100 times, why should they object us taking the  precious name of  Jesus 53 times in the Rosary?

9. Even our breathing is a repetition. Do we stop breathing because it is a repetition?  Just as breathing is a gift of God, so  also praying continuously is  a gift of God.

10. I have attended a number of meetings by different denominations. Though our Lord has said that when praying do not use too many words as the heathens do because your Father knows what things you need, before you ask Him. Therefore you shall pray . . . Our Father, who art in heaven . . . I have never heard them saying the Lord’s prayer. They start with their own words and end up with their own words!

11. We use the Rosary to recite the prayers because we need to concentrate on the prayers as prayer is the raising of the mind and heart to God (Saint John Damascene). We are supposed to meditate on the various mysteries (Joyful, sorrowful, glorious and luminous). The monks used to have two bags – one empty and the other with pebbles, usually 50 pebbles. As they recite each Hail Mary, they used to put the pebble from one bag to the other.  This allowed them to recite all the Hail Marys without worrying about the counting.

12.      2 Timothy 2 : 24 – 25  A servant of the Lord must not quarrel. He must be kind towards all, good and patient teacher, who is gentle as he corrects his opponents, for it may be that God will give them the opportunity to repent and come to know the truth.

John 8 : 32 And you shall know the truth and the truth will set you free.

So be patient with their queries and do not get irritated with their arguments. Invoke the Holy Spirit to guide you and take the name of Mary on your lips as Saint Anthony did while speaking to the heretics

If they can repeat those words more than 100 times, why should they object us taking the  precious name of  Jesus 53 times in the Rosary?
